A small sanding drum running at low speed is used to shape the neck base and button of the back plate.
..Make the button project 0.500" past the front of the back plate and make the button 0.827" wide (0.414" radius).
This is my organizer box for various sanding sticks. Some are round wood dowells with sand paper glued on, some are flat in varous lengths and widths, while some are pieces of cork with curved sections covered with sanding paper.
With a long sanding board, I begin to refine the rough under neck surface after sanding the neck root to the correct radius (as measured from the upper plate edge).

Here I am using a neck section gage, part of a two gage set with eight station profiles (from violin maker Ray Doerr's professional violin making manual) to get neck shape close to the ideal.
